Add "Strings" to the Instrument list
2.0.3 / Win 7
In the Chose Instruments (or Instruments) window, add "Strings" and "String synthesizer". These would both display as a Treble/Bass grand staff and include the "Strings" GM2 preset.

Oops. There is a String synthesizer option after all. But it would still be useful to have a "Strings" instrument as well.
Which GM Setup (for Strings)?
49 String Ensemble 1
or
50 String Ensemble 2
or one of
51 Synth Strings 1
52 Synth Strings 2
In either case presumably plus
45 Tremolo Strings
46 Pizzicato Strings

The patch is simply called "Strings" in the mixer (FluidSynth).

Still GM has more patches for this. Fluid calls them Strings and Slow Strings

I'm referring to the GM2 list here . The mixer doesn't use the same names, but the "sound" called "Strings" is maybe the best fit.

That is the name in Fluid for String Ensemble (1). And the entry used for violins, violoas, violoncellos and basses, i.e. all plural string instruments.

Ah, a misunderstanding on my apart. I didn't realise there were separate entries for both solo and ensemble string instruments. Perhaps, the "strings" sound could be added to the existing "String synthesizer"?
In reply to Ah, a misunderstanding on my by geetar
I don't really think it belongs there, and strings synthesizer has 2 sounds already
Strings is a section name - not an instrument.
Therefore it should not be added as an instrument.
It takes a few seconds to remove the word Synthesiser from the String Synthesiser instrument. I suggest therefore that if you wish to include deprecated practice in your scores, you should add the String Synth and then alter its Stave data.

By "section name", do you mean the name displayed in the mixer under "Sound"?
In reply to By "section name", do you by geetar
I think he means, a section of an orchestra (the others are woodwind, brass, and percussion(). There is no instrument called "strings" - that is just the collective name for violins, violas, cellos, and basses. Composer do not write music for "strings" - they write it for specific instruments. Separate staves for separate isntruments is the norm. If you wrote music and put it on a staff called "strings", musicians would not know how to play it. if you want the music players by violins, you should write Violins; write Violas if you want violas to play it, etc. The ranges of these instruments differ so you cannot just write any old melody and expect all stringed instruments to be able to play it.
