Can't save preferences
Hi, I can't save my preferences. If I save some changes, after restarting the application the changed preferences are lost. Sometimes I can't see the transport and input bar, but they are checked in the display menu. I must uncheck and check the transport menu and then they become available.
Any idea?
Matt

I work with an iMac 27", 2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7. It seems I can't save my preferences. I tried to reinstall all, I deleted the preferences but nothing changes. Any idea?
Matt

Can you be more specific about what you are doing? which preferences? Only the setting in edit->preferences and a few miscellaneous others are saved, not layout or style settings, which are part of your document, not part of your preferences. You can save the style, or create a template contains both the style and layout settings.

Menu Musescore -> Preferences... (see image)
I should save the following preferences:
Program start (empty / continue last session / star with new score etc.)
Windows (show Play Panel / Show Navigator / Show Musescore Connect
Application Font: ...
Background color or pattern...
Or: Menu -> Display -> Synthesizer -> default SoundFont.
I would like to save those preferences. I tried with a Nightly Build, and in this case the preferences are correctly saved, but then there's a lot of other problems (obviously ;)
Matt
Did you really install MuseScore (dragged it into applications folder) or do you run it while being mounted?
In reply to Installation by Thomas
Yes, it is correctly installed in the applications folder.
In reply to Installed by micrologus
Yes, exact same problem for me on 10.6.4, Intel MacPro, MuseScore 1.1. Apply preference changes, quit, restart Musescore and they're exactly the same as they were. It won't allow me to change the startup state, MIDI input, etc.
Thanks,
Jason

Thank you for your reply. In this case I know it's not my computer's problem. I hope it can be fixed, because I can't use some functions. For example, insert notes with MIDI keyboard is not possible if I can't save the keyboard I/O preferences.

How do you know it's not something on your computer? There are thousands of people using MuseScore on MacOS, and only a couple seem to have this problem. So it seems quite likely it is something about your specific computers that is different from others. Mind you, I,m not saying that means it isn't a bug in MuseScore - it very likely is. But still, a bug that is only triggered on ertain computers for some reason. So I suspect it would be helpful if you could describe more about your environment - anything special about your drive configuration, user accounts, etc.

So, thousands of people doesn't have this problem? I'm happy it's so, because I love Musescore. I would be glad to solve this problem, obviously.
My computer: iMac 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 27" (December 2010), Ram 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Mac Os X 10.6.8
What kind of other information could I give you?
Thank You for your answer.
Matteo

Ok,
I've tried Musescore on my iBook, with the same OS (Mac Os X.6.8). I can confirm that here the preferences are saved correctly. The problem is obviously in my iMac. I hope someone can help me to solve the problem. Thank you!
Matteo
(Where are the preferences saved?)
In reply to On my MacBook it works by micrologus
I had some minor problems saving preferences. It seems that, at least for some of them, one needs to close Mscore from File>Quit and not closins the windows.

I created a new account on my iMac, and there Musescore saves correctly the preferences! There is perhaps a conflict in my main account? I use LilyPond, could it cause the problem?
In reply to I had some minor problems by robert leleu
Hi Robert, I tried your suggestion but it doesn't work. Thanks anyway!

@Micrologus
Just asking: Is it possible that you ran MuseScore as a mounted package at first, and afterwards installed it as normal?
Could you try to revert to factory settings? http://musescore.org/en/handbook/revert-factory-settings
In reply to An idea by Thomas
Yes, I tried this too, but it doesn't work. Thank You Thomas!
In reply to An idea by Thomas
That last comment about resetting to factory gave me a clue. I checked my ~/.config directory. It existed and was owned by root with 755 permissions, which means my normal user couldn't write to it. There was a bunch of stuff in there from VSL, the Vienna Symphonic Library. I'm guessing VSL got there first and is using that .config directory for its own purposes.
As root, I did a chown -r jason:staff ~/.config and now MuseScore properly saves preferences.
Seems to be an issue if you have VSL installed.
Thanks for the tip!
Jason
In reply to POSSIBLE FIX: Can't save preferences by jstaczek
Yes, I have VSL installed. Could you explain how you solved the problem?
Matt
In reply to VSL by micrologus
From Terminal:
cd ~
sudo chown -r :staff .config
/Applications/MuseScore.app/Contents/MacOS/mscore -F
Substitute your username for above.
Best,
Jason

Whoops. The forum ate some characters. Should have been:
From Terminal:
cd ~
sudo chown -r USERNAME:staff .config
/Applications/MuseScore.app/Contents/MacOS/mscore -F
Substitute your user name for USERNAME above.
Best,
Jason

Sorry, I tried in terminal but it didn't work. I think I will use Musescore in a new account.
Thanks for the help.

I made visible the hidden folders using this command in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
The Muse.org folder was not in the ~/.config folder. So I copied the folder from the new account I created on my iMac and pasted it in the ~/.config folder. Now Musescore saves the preferences correctly. Thank You for your help!
To make invisible the hidden folders: Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder

Given your explanation, wouldn't these permissions affect other apps from saving their prefs if the entire directory is affected?
[EDIT] You should also update your issue #14680: Can't save preferences (MacOs X) with your fix.

I never noticed problems saving preferences in other applications so far.

I'm having the same problem using Musescore 1.1 on ubuntu 10.04, specifically when changing sound preferences.
This is what happens:
1) Open Musescore
2) Change i/O preferences by clicking off Use Internal Synthesizer.
3) Change selecting Use Jack MIDI Output.
4) Close musescore
5) Open musescore
6) Go to Edit - Preferences. Result Use Jack Midi IS selected,BUT also Use Internal Synthesizer remains selected.
Thank you all.

Do you have QjackCtl running?
If not then I don't think MuseScore will be able to connect with it, and may be defaulting to Use Internal Synthesiser so you have sound

I know this is an old thread, but I had the same issues with Ubuntu 18.04 and MuseScore 2.3.2. I initially installed it in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, and it worked fine (that is, after I found out how to use the "install" command on an AppImage. (Installing it from the "Software" panel was a disaster--it couldn't access the hard drive where my files were.)
Anyway, so I reinstalled Ubuntu (different SSD) a few days back, and installed the latest MuseScore (2.3.2 as of this time). All was fine and dandy...until I realized that the preferences weren't saving. After finding this forum post, I found that the permissions on "home/.config/MuseScore" was set to "root." I changed that to my username (like the rest of the folders in the ".config" directory, and MuseScore started saving SOME settings. It updated the INI file with no problems that I'm aware of.
It remembered the following:
- Recent scores (but NOT "last session")
- Color settings (light/dark)
- The startup options (but they didn't work--i.e. "Continue last session" opened an empty MuseScore, and showed the "Start Center")
It did NOT remember/save any of my keyboard shortcut preferences, which was very annoying. (I assign the numeric keypad to the note durations, so I can easily enter music with the notes on the left hand, and durations on the right hand.)
On a hunch, I ran MuseScore from a command prompt...and found that there was another set of folders it uses: "home/.local/share/data/MuseScore/MuseScore2/". This appeared to have been created by the MuseScore installer, as everything from "data" onwards also only allowed "Root" access. After changing permissions on all the folders and files to my username...MuseScore finally started to remember everything like it was intended to.
I don't know where this error got started, though I did install the AppImage with "sudo"; perhaps it's not properly identifying the context, and just installed with the "root" context it had at that point. For what it's worth--hopefully this helps someone else.

Sudo will of course install as root.
In reply to Sudo will of course install… by Jojo-Schmitz
Hmm, strange. I guess there's a difference between "installing AppImages" verses "installing debs", as the latter generally requires "sudo." At least I'm happy to have figured out what was amiss, and I'm back a happy camper in Ubuntu with MuseScore. WinDoze and Finale have been on the back burner for so long that I've started forgetting how to use Finale...!
Even when installed as root, though, it doesn't require root access to run--just parts of it didn't work. I'm not well versed in the finer details of Ubuntu-land -- I'm just glad to get it working again.
In reply to Hmm, strange. I guess there… by FullSound
It really depends on whether you want to install for a single user or for all users of a system. AppImagtes are more for single users, that don't need or even have the right to install anything
Yes, QJackCtl is running. On its GUI Musescore appears on the MIDI tab, but fails to connect to any instance.
