MuseScore not saving my file

• Apr 2, 2012 - 14:10

I upgraded to MuseScore 1.2 last Wednesday: since then I have had problems with MuseScore refusing to save my score (nothing happens when pressing save/save as). The problem has been fixed by re-installing MuseScore but when I start the programme up the next day I have the same problem and I've had to re-istall again. I've had to do this for four days running now and am desperate for some help please.
Is there a fix/patch/something for this? Is there any way that I can roll back to the previous version as it didn't have this issue?

Note: I haven't changed any of the recommended settings whilst installing and I'm running windows 7. I also haven't had any other programmes open whilst starting the programme up.

Please help!

Many thanks,

Nina

Connected to the previous issue,
I just tried to re-install the 1:2 version another time and the save/save as function still doesn't work so I now am completely stuck and have lost almost an entire days' work.
Please please help.
Thanks

You might also try rebooting. No, I can't say why that might help, but nor can I imagine how this problem could possibly exist.

If you load a file, make a change, does the asterisk appear next to the score name at the top of the score display? If you then hit Ctrl-S (shortcut for Save), does it not go away?

Hi guys,
thanks for the comments.

No, nothing happens when I press save or save as: no dialogue box pops up and the star (asterisk) does not disappear, indicating that no save has taken place

Yes, I've re-booted: same result: still can't save.

I've since managed to borrow another laptop with the older version on it (which works) so I have been able to resume work thank goodness, but if a fix could be found which solves this bug that'd be amazing. :-)
Thanks again,

Nina

Since no one else has ever reported anything like this, it's probably going to be next to impossible to reproduce and fix, unfortunately. Have you tried a factory reset of all MuseScore settings? http://musescore.org/en/handbook/revert-factory-settings.

If that doesn't fix it, I would have to think there is a strong possibility there is something going on unique to your system - some sort of interaction with anti-virus software or something like that. You might try temporarily turning off your anti-virus, or anything else you might be running that could conceivably interfere with file operations.

Marc,
I am a new musescore user trying to salvage/ rescue older copies of choir music. I just downloaded version 1.2 yesterday; excellent program by the way.
I am having the same problem as Nina.
The save dialog box does not open, the asterisk does not disappear, and when I press control+s there is a flicker at the top of the musescore screen; however nothing happens(no dialog box ect.) I am also running Windows 7, have AVG antivirus and have not changed any of the recommended settings. I did however have an internet window open to use the musescore tutorial videos. Also I do not know but is musescore supposed to close without asking if you want to save your work? I had a piece started earlier today and closed the program by accident, and as I am typing this just realized that it did not ask me to save before closing.
Is an older version of musescore available somewhere temporally?

Most odd. You have tried rebooting to make sure it isn't a zombie process lying around, hidden dialog awaiting input, or something like that?

No, MuseScore does not normally close without prompting you to save unfinished work.

Whatever is going on would seem more likely to be something systemic that won't go away just by installing a different version of MuseScore. But I suspect if you Googled around, you might find some site somewhere offering the 1.1 version to try.

I have rebooted ect.
I am however able to save online so that is a blessing; it is the only save dialog that opes properly.

After I rebooted the save dialog box came up on close but as with Ctrl-S or selecting save, there is just a flash on the screen and the save dialog does not go any further. Now that I have saved it online and then reloaded the online save to the program the save dialog opens up; so I can save to PC.
This is the same music I tried to save to my PC yesterday. I still cannot save a work in progress to PC.

I have to save online in order to save to my PC it seems.
All queries for version 1.1 redirect me to 1.2; at least I can save online then move it to my PC.
Interestingly enough my computer crashed in the middle of working this morning and when I restarted it asked me if I wanted to continue where I left off and no work was lost.

Hello everybody!
I am also having the problem of not being able to save.
When I try to close it, it prompts me to save my work which I do, but when I check to see If it saved before closing, it doesn't show it. It does however show the asterisk, which I believe means it saved.
I can't find a way to save it online either. My account works completley fine, whenever I log in regularly I can do it no problem.
But when I try to save online, and it prompts me to log in, it keeps on telling me that my username and\or password is incorrect, both of which are correct.
Please do help me!

I have the same problem, except when I try to close it prompts me to save but doesn't let me. I had a lot of work done that I couldn't save. Being the genius I am, I copied it all (I was going to close the program, reopen it, and paste it back in). Except, when I opened it up, it seemed to have forgotten that I copied anything at all! So now I'm having to COMPLETELY redo the entire project even though I can't save it. Suggestions, please? Maybe something that won't cause me to lose my second copy (which, unfortunately, is not even as good as the original)?

Using MuseScore 1.2 on Windows Vista. Hasn't started till recently (just yesterday, actually).

PC. But I've been using MS 1.2 for a while now without any problems this severe. To be honest, it's kind of unnerving knowing that my work could be destroyed instantly without warning. However, I have a deadline I have to meet with this song, so it's pretty important that I get finished soon. With this many people with the problem, I kind of doubt that it's a system malfunction, but 1.2 has been out for a while now, so I have a hard time believing it's a result of that, either.

When you say it "doesn't let" you save, what is happening, exactly? If you do Save As, does the dialog show up?

Copy and paste would not normally work once you close a program, except for things that can be stored in an application-independent format, like plain text. I don't think there is anything that could be done about that.

In reply to by Marc Sabatella

ChurchOrganist, I'm not really sure what you mean by that. I assume "UI" refers to "User Interface," but I'm not sure what you mean by theme.

Marc, saving does absolutely nothing. I can click Save, Save As, etc. and it'll blink, but it will not save and no dialog box will come up (unless I try to close it. Then it will prompt me, but it will not save when I click save). I did upload the score to musescore.com, but I was hoping to have a way to fix this so I don't have to buy a pro account.

I am having this problem and I was trying to save, so i left the screen up on my comp and 4 hours later i had a million messages asking where to save to. I tried this again but it didn't work twice, so i would guess this is a bug in the system. Is there any way to write to MuseScore?

Hi!
I wrote with MuseScore today for the first time and I had a great time, but...
when I saved my score on the Desktop, I lost it and I found another file (a first sketch) instead...
I was looking anywhere in the mac, but I couldn't find any recovered file with my work!
I had to write a new version (and still it would be great to have the old one!).
Does anybody know if I have any chance to get my old file back?
Thanks,
Lau

I'm guessing the file you found was the backup that MuseScore creates automatically - it's name starts with a period and ends with a comma. The real file would be further down the list of files in the folder. Saving to the desktop doesn't seem like a good idea to me since you won't see the list of files as a list, but presumably there is a way on MacOS to browse to the folder that represents your desktop, and if so, you should be able to find both files.

In the middle of the afternoon I suddenly was not able to save a file. The system reports
-------------
Open Temp File
/media/640 GB Hard Disk/home/kentfx/Music/Alice/Current scores/Look Up.mscz.temp
Failed: Permission denied
-------------
I tried two other pieces that I've written in Musescore -- without making any changes in them, just trying to save -- and they came up with the same message (notice the word "temp" following the filename -- not sure where that comes from).

I've rebooted twice. I checked permissions on the files; they report I have the rights to them.

Musescore is running on Ubuntu 12.04 Linux on a solid state boot drive. All the data is on a 640 GB disk that's just for data.

If someone has some help I'd surely appreciate it.

Hi Kent,

I think this is a Linux File Permissions issue.

It's been a while since I dealt with something like this but.......

IIRC permissions need to be set for various user profiles associated with one user, depending on which part of the operating system you are saving from/to, and some applications also require those permissions.

You need to go into the file permissions configuration dialogue and check that all the various user profiles associated with your user account have full read/write permissions.

Sorry if this is a bit hazy, but it's been over 12 months since I did this, and my linux partition is currently out of commission.

Thanks for your response. I'm certainly learning more about security issues than I ever wanted to know.

It all seems rather over-the-top for one guy in a little house on the beach having to work through a maze of configurations and permissions as though he's planning drone strikes for the CIA, just in order to write some emails and a little orchestra music.

Anyway, I've worked out the file permissions issue and once again, thank the gods, we're back to Musescore.

I uninstalled MuseScore 1.2 and installed MuseScore 1.1. Since I'm using Vista, I expect MuseScore 1.2 is more compatible with the newer Microsoft operating systems.

I didn't understand the question, can not save files or you can not install V.1.2?
More details might help. (http://musescore.org/en/handbook/how-report-bug-or-ask-support)

In the first case:
make sure the file name does not contain special characters (for example :/;/ ° / _)
In the second case:
- Try Uninstall all (old MuseScore);
- Open C :/ Choose Folder Options, View. Select Show hidden files.
browse the hard disk, if they still exist:
C :/ Users / name / AppData / Roaming / Muse. Delete the folder (Muse).
C :/ Users / name / AppData / Local / Muse. Delete the folder (Muse).
- Download and install (last: 1.2) MuseScore.

Hi, I just tried to replicate this problem, I added A Colon to a score and made test one. Im using 1.2, and it works. It lets me save with a colon (:) in the title. Im using Windows 7. So, maybe your system doesn't like colons.

In reply to by simalary44

A colon in title is not the problem, but if you create a new score, the filenames MuseScore offers you is derived from the title, so when it contains a : , the filename will too and then saving fails, unless you take the colon out (of the filename).

Issue is solved with the brandnew version 1.3 though.

In reply to by Jojo-Schmitz

Meaning, in 1.2, if the title has a colon *when you create the score in the wizard*, MuseScore will try to use the colon as part of the filename, and it will fail (on Awondows, at least). This is what is fixed in 1.3. But even in 1.2, you can add colons to the title *after* the score is created and there will be no problems - MuseScore will have already decided on the appropriate default filename based on the title that existed when you created the score.

HI, I'm using version 1.3 on windows 8, and I have a very similar problem. My file will save as a midi or musescore file, but it refuses to save as any kind of audio file: .wav, .flac, ect. It will just blink, and when i check my files, it isn't there. I've tried re installing musescore, but to no avail.

Hello, just to say that I'm also having this problem with file not saving. If it's helpful at all in diagnosing the problem, there's a pop-up window that says permission denied (this is a new Macbook Air).
