Specific amount of bars rest neede to be displayed

• Apr 13, 2012 - 10:22

HI. I'm trying to copy out a Trombone part for the Grieg Piano concerto and the music is requiring me to show 10 bars rest, then I come to letter A. I then need it to show 12 then another 12 bars rest. Normally Muscore would show that as 34. I've got around the first 10 by putting a double bar in, but I can't do that all the way through.

Is there anyway I can get it to display 10, then 12 then 12 then I come to letter B.

Brill program, I've only been using it two days and I'm getting to grips with it.

Thanks

I'm using Version 1.1 in ubuntu 10.04 so behaviour in your version might be different but here's what I do:

Create an empty piece in 4/4 time with, say, 100 bars all containing minim rests. In Style->Edit General Style->Score check "Create Multi Bar Rests"*. Count along to the eleventh bar and click on the first rest in that bar. Then press [Ctrl]-M to bring up a section label box and type [Shift]-A to label it as Section A. Count along to the thirteenth bar after that, [Ctrl-M], [Shift]-B, count along again etc. Now you have labelled your section but each bar shows individual rests. To turn them in to multi-bar rests you select the empty bars and press [Delete]. The multibar rests are split whenever anything is entered in a a bar, be it a double-line bar end, a Section label (as here) or even a section label that you make invisible.

*To save time I created and saved a blank piece like this for Bb Cornet, called "Solo_Cornet_100Bars" and made the file read-only. Then I open it whenever I need to do a new piece for cornet (or other single instrument - just change the settings) and save the composition under a new name.

Thank you. It is, of course, logical and sensible to create a template for something that one will use repeatedly. In my case I just do File->Open Recent->filename as I have usually used the blank piece recently. I do have templates for Brass Band Score, Small Brass Ensemble etc., however, since I am less likely to have one of them in my recently-used files list. Many ways to achieve the same goal in MuseScore which is good because flexibility is key to productivity.
