[Sony Vaio] Dragging PNG with transparency onto vertical frame causes crash
1. Load attached score created in MuseScore 1.2
Expected result: Score loads
Actual result: MuseScore hangs for a shor time then crashes.
After some poking around I have narrowed the problem down to the Title Page Graphic.
I have not yet ascertained whether inserting the graphic into the score in R5562 results in a crash.

Follow up.
Dragging and dropping the PNG file concerned into a score in R5562 crashes MuseScore.
PNG attached.
See above for OS and MuseScore Version.
This works for me on linux. Most probably the drag&drop format on windows is different.
It's something to do with this particular file.
Other PNGs have imported ok
I can't reproduce on Windows with r5621. The PNG imports ok in the file and the file is loaded without a crash.
Can you check again ? Maybe give more details to reproduce ?
I'll try again with the latest version
Ok I have now defined a repeatable crash.
1. Create score
2. Insert vertical frame above first stave (if you didn't already define a title)
3. Drag a png with transparency onto the frame.
Result - Crash
Dragging a png with a background colour works OK, but as soon as you use one with transparency set MuseScore crashes.
MuseScore 2.0 r5621/Windows XP Pro SP3
Title adjusted to reflect the new findings.
Do you have enough info now to pursue this?
I tried again. Following your instructions and using your PNG in #1... and I have no crash :( Anything else that could help reproducting the bug ?
Which version of Windows do you use lasconic?
It crashes every time on my system either following those instructions or dragging into a vertical frame present in a previously created score.
Gonna try on my other laptop - WindowsXP Home SP3
Same thing happens on my other laptop
Clicking the More Info button on the Microsoft Crash window yields the following info:
AppName: nightly.exe
AppVer: 0.0.0.0
ModName: qtgui4.dll
ModVer: 4.8.0.0
Offset: 000086be

Is anyone else able to reproduce this?
Not me, using R5659 under Win7 32bit, with your graphic and either a new score or your original score. I even resized the graphic, moved it, added notes etc. XP specific?
Could you supply a sample graphic? I'm not sure how to create an image with altered transparency.
Why not use his supplied PNG in #1?
There is an example file in #1 Chen.
This is definitely a weird one!
I've just installed R5651 on my Acer Netbook running XP Home SP3 and I can drag and drop the graphic concerned without a crash!
So there is something more here than meets the eye.
I'm currently wondering if it is a graphic driver problem.
I've tried "Revert to Factory settings" and that hasn't done it.
How do I get a dump of the crash log??
"I've just installed R5651 on my Acer Netbook running XP Home SP3 and I can drag and drop the graphic concerned without a crash!". I thought you were building your own nightlies and hence could test out the latest R5659 (now at 5660!), but if you're not I am still uploading the builds to my musescore folder.
OK thanks schepers :)
I've tracked down the problem now.
Both the laptops I checked this out on were connected to an external monitor.
I've just tried on the Sony Vaio without the external monitor, and there was no crash!
Weird!
Subject line altered accordingly.
Sorry, I didn't see it.
I can't reproduce.
Using MuseScore 2.0 Nightly Build (5659) - Mac 10.7.4.
Cross-posting changed the title
I've never seen an externally-connected screen cause anything, unless your graphics driver has issues. I doubt the screen is causing the problem. Can you reproduce this issue as soon as you hook up the external screen? Is there a graphics driver update for the laptop?
My system is dual-monitor so I got thinking that maybe running MS on the second monitor might be causing the issues. I managed to get your sample MSCZ file to crash on the second monitor, but only once. It came up but where the graphic should have been there was only a bounding box with an X from corner to corner. When I tried to move or resize it, MS crashed.
I never had any issues placing the graphic into a new score on either monitor.
"Can you reproduce this issue as soon as you hook up the external screen?"
Yes, on my Sony Vaio, with display directed to the laptop screen all works fine.
As soon as you divert display to the external monitor I get this crashing.
Am going to see what happens on the netbook tomorrow when I put that through an external monitor.
I'm also going to see what happens when the display is cloned to both display devices.
Well my Acer Netbook imported the graphic successfully without a crash with the display connected to an external monitor.
It uses the pretty much the same Intel graphics chip that is in my Vaio - but it's 945 Express instead of 945GM Express.
I tried using a newer driver on the Vaio but all that did was degrade the appearance of the fonts in MuseScore, it crashed again when importing the graphic.
I'm beginning to wonder if it's something to do with my particular installation of the Nightlies - the one on the Acer Netbook is a clean install.
I've tried a reset to factory defaults - but that hasn't improved matters.
How can I perform a clean install of a Nightly build?
Just experienced crashing when using the laptop screen with a png graphic with transparency.
So there is something else at work here.
Title adjusted accordingly.
Next step is to see if I can make the crash happen on my netbook.
Been playing around with this again today.
I am becoming more and more convinced that this is a graphics driver problem.
The 2 laptops which are subject to crashing are both using the Intel GM Graphics chipset albeit with 2 different versions.
They are also both customised versions of the Intel drivers - 1 Sony, 1 Gateway neither of which respond well to upgrading with Intel's revised drivers.
It's quite possible that it is the customisation which is causing problems.
My Acer netbook does not crash in this way, and neither does my ancient desktop which runs an old Nvidia AGP graphics card.
This begs the question whether it is worth trying to fix due to incompatibilty with obsolete machines.
Your thoughts guys?
FWIW, Qt 4.8.2 has an updated libpng. It might solve the problem when we upgrade it in the nightlies. Qt 4.8.2 is not yet available in the Qt SDK though
Can you let me know when it is implemented lasconic?
Sure, this issue will be updated.
Thought I'd shorten it, but you can change if you're not happy :).
That's a lot better Chen :)
The nightlies for WIndows are now built with Qt 4.8.4. Could someone with Windows XP try to reproduce the problem?
Well, dragging any png into 697eab5 in WinXP SP3 doesn't work. No carsh, but no images to be seen either
And I have now moved on to Windows 8
No news for years. I didn't read anything like this in the forum. I close this issue. Please reopen if needed.
