Quintuplet Over Three Eighths
I am trying to transcribe John Field's Nocturne (in Bb Major), and I am encountering a problem transcribing m. 16.
It's a 12/8 piece, and on the fourth beat, the treble clef has a quintuplet in that beat, while the bass clef has three eighth notes.
My trouble comes in when I include a tied dotted half note and dotted quarter note in the treble for the first three beats. The rests that fill the rest of the measure are eighth and quarter rests, respectively. When I try to put in the quintuplet, it tries to fit it in one rest or the other, when it should really fit across the whole beat. How do I get it to do this...is there a way to combine rest values?
Thanks!

It always helps to see an image of what you are trying to transcribe/create - even a crudely-drawn Paint effort but...
Try clicking on the first rest of the third beat.
Press 5 . (that's 5 followed by a decimal point) then [Ctrl]-and-5
Now enter the notes.

I tried to include a picture, but none of the free versions seem to include the quintuplet...maybe I'll ask my professor if she'll let me use one of those versions. :)
It worked! Thank you so much!
You're welcome.
To explain...
5. means "prepare for input of a dotted quarter-note"
[Ctrl]-5 means "place 5 notes in the space of the note you have just prepared for"

I understood [Ctrl] 5, but it was nice to get the 5 .
Thanks!
