Can't download updated version
I have 9.6 Beta pre-release, which enabled some good scores but suddenly when I tried to enter a tie it crashed. I tried several times on several scores, and having wasted huge amounts of time I decided to download the latest - but it says I can't because I already have Musescore installed.
Do I have to delete the beta version and risk losing work before I can download the new 1.2?

Uninstalling 0.9.6 should not result on losing any work. Deleting it though might.

Thanks. I should have described it as uninstalling. The difference is subtle.
Is it likely that the reason I cannot download the newer version is that I need to uninstall the Beta version before doing so?

No. Download and install have nothing to do with one another (other than that the later requires the former to be done first ;-))
Which OS are you using?
Some older versions of Ubuntu have to have the MuseScore PPA added to the list of repositories before the system will recognise the need for an upgrade.

thanks for suggestions.
I am using Ubuntu about 2006, and I have to admit that I am not all that good at keeping track of updates and so on - partly because the programs all have names that are unfamiliar to me.
What is the PPA?

It explains about the PPA in the link I mentioned.
It is possible though that your version of Ubuntu is too old.
My Linux box runs Mint Katya which is based on Ubuntu 11.04, and I have been able to run MuseScore 1.2 successfully on that, but it is currently out of action due to having to resinstall Windows (it's dual boot) which has overwritten the Grub Boot system.
