Wrong Instrument Sounds

• Dec 31, 2012 - 14:31

Hi all,
I just downloaded the version 1.2 of Musescore and find that with any new score, the instrument sounds are not only wrong but 1/2 step lower (flute and sop. recorder. I tried reloading with no success. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Sandy T.

Posting a score would help. It's difficult to tell exactly what you mean otherwise. But FWIW, are you sure the instrument you are comparing against isn't tuned 1/2 a step too high?

Hi Sandy -

I'm not sure what you mean by wrong. If it's just the pitch of the notes, earlier responses may help.

If it's because the instruments sound artificial, it may be that you need a better soundfont to play them back with.

If however, a flute sounds like saxophone (for example), there may be something else going on.

Can you explain the issue a little better, please?

Fifist

EDIT: If you are talking about a jittery sound when playing back the music from within MuseScore, then try adjusting the reverb. Go to File -> Synthesizer, then adjust the Rev and Cho sliders so they are not zero.

Thanks Fifist, Marc
After a few tries more, the octave issue seems to be resolved. I did check the 440 setting and also discovered the 1/2 step problem was my fault. (I'd set something on the keyboard transposer button.)
Thanks so much for your input. I'm not sure why the instruments were originally an octave too low but it's ok now.

Sandy T.

If you're hearing instrument an octave from where you expect, do be aware that this is how some instruments do actually work - guitar, bass, piccolo, soprano recorder, tuba. They are all written an octave higher or lower than they sound in order to fit better on a standard treble or bass clef. So they may be treated by MuseScore (and other notation programs) as transposing instruments - showing written or sounding pitch depending on the state of the Concert Pitch button. Sometimes instead they are written using one of the octave-transposing clefs (with the little "8" above or below), allowing them to be displayed the same way regardless of the state of the Concert Pitch button. So depending on your particular score, that might be what you were seeing - the normal effects of the instruments in question.

I am unable to select voltas by double clicking. I even re-installed Musescore just in case my copy was corrupt but I still have the same problem. I need to extend a line over two measures. Any suggestions? Many thanks.
