[Pokegeeks] A little something I noticed with Blue's theme (R/B/Y)

• May 17, 2017 - 07:48

It seems Junichi Masuda used a little more theming than I once thought.
Let's take a look at rival Blue's theme from R/B/Y.
derp
Alright, iconic. For our purposes, we'll look at just the first four notes.
yep
Now, let's move on over to "Final Battle! (Rival)", the champion battle theme for Gen 1.
Here's the first few notes of the melody:
lick
Once again, we'll look at just the first four notes.
okay.
Next, I'll transpose them up to the same key as Blue's theme.
wait...
Do you notice? It's just the same as Blue's theme, just reversed! It seems these two iconic themes were just two sides of the same jerk-faced coin all along!
For clarity's sake, I'll even add the reversed rhythm:
yeah
I hope we all learned something today. Smell ya later!

If you read Schoenberg's book on 12 notes (Twelve note technique), you can see many different transformation techniques there: retrograde, inversion, inverted intervals, retrograded inversion of inverted intervals... // as known as mirroring, reverse playing, etc...

These techniques can be partly applied to (and applied to) Major, minor and Blues melodies too.

Also read: Oblique Strategies: Brian Eno.
