Notes pile up on each other in one spot

• Jun 29, 2013 - 06:05

Using MuseScore 1.3, Win7 64-bit desktop, M-Audio MIDISport Uno interface, Yamaha PSR-400. When I begin a new score (or select a rest at the end of an existing score) and enter new notes from the MIDI keyboard, new notes get entered for a while as they should but then something happens and note entry stops and the notes pile up on each other in one spot. It's as if a note got entered past the entry point so there is now a note to push against and since MuseScore does not perform insertion (and probably never will - yes, I've been reading this forum) note entry stops and the notes pile up. I understand that I cannot play the keyboard in real time and have the durations automatically set. But note entry at the end of a score does work right up until it doesn't.

If I leave note entry mode, click at the end of the score and try again to enter new notes I get the message "No note selected: Please select a single note and retry operation." Neither turning MIDI input off and on nor turning the keyboard off and on - none of the solutions suggested in this forum resolve that problem (other than restarting MuseScore which is NOT a solution).

I was in a Guitar Center store today (great people, very patient) trying to get the M-Audio MIDISport Uno to work and I brought along my keyboard and a laptop (also Win7 64-bit). We got the M-Audio MIDISport Uno to work and then noticed the note piling up behavior described above. Because we could we tried several of the keyboards in the store and observed the same behavior. Some of the keyboards we connected using USB directly instead of the M-Audio MIDISport Uno and observed the same behavior. Thus the problem is not the keyboard nor the MIDI interface and occurs on more than one computer. Could still be a Win7 64-bit issue though.

What can I do to help someone duplicate and resolve this issue?

Thanks for your reply, Jm6stringer. However, I am nowhere near the end of the score when this occurs as shown in the attached image. (And, BTW, I did not play the subterranean or the dog-whistle notes that appear, in case that is a clue to the MIDI handling problems going on.)

I did discover that, after the pileup occurs, I can still enter new notes from the computer keyboard , just not from the MIDI keyboard. (The "No note selected" message appears.)

The PileUp1.mscz attachment shows the anomaly occurring in measure 6, whereas it occurs in measure 3 of your image file.
So, you start entering notes C, E,C,E... etc. and then out from nowhere this occurs? At a random measure?
In the 'gigantic chord' of PileUp1, I started deleting the notes one by one and counted multiple layers with a total of over 70 notes. There is even a hidden quarter rest under the notes on the right side of the stem. Bad midi connection? (Just a guess)

However, I did use your score to enter notes trying to replicate the problem:
1. I right clicked in the treble clef of the 'piled up' measure and deleted the chord, then entered notes - worked just fine.
2. Started again with a fresh copy of 'PileUp1' and, leaving the chord intact, clicked on the half note rest in that measure. Then, in note entry mode, had no problem completing the measure. Playback worked, even with the crazy chord in the measure.
3. Started again with a fresh copy of 'PileUp1' and entered notes 'on top' of your notes, starting before the problem measure and working through the measure. It worked fine...

I am using Musescore 1.3 under WindowsXP sp3. My note entry is through a Yamaha keyboard using a midi-usb driver. You mentioned that Guitar Center had the same problem with different configurations of keyboards. Maybe time to try this with a different OS?

Perhaps someone with the same OS can be of more help in replicating the problem.
Regards...
