Mutes
It is possible to change the notehead in the pitched stave to 'cross' for muted notes.
However, I wonder about the counterpart tablature notes.

I don't think we should define this as a default.
Crosses are often used to indicate Harmonics in Classical Guitar music.
Given the ease with which a notehead can be changed I suggest it be left to the user to implement when and if (s)he needs it.

Perhaps I didn't explain properly.
Basically, I want to know about how to achieve what is in the tablature stave (notice the differently presented numbers).

I wouldn't care but I would make it a very very low priority.
