Moving a rest

• Oct 9, 2013 - 06:29

I was sketching some thoughts recently, and decided I wanted to put a rest in front of a measure as a place to hold a fermata (because something will be happening in a different instrument once I get where I'm going). So I changed the measure property from 3/4 to 4/4, which automatically put the rest at the end of the measure. I dragged the rest to the beginning of the measure; but that changed nothing on playback; neither can I properly space the measure. Is there a simple way to get the rest onto beat 1 at the start of the measure, so that MS will recognize it and play it? FWIW, I might note that the nominal duration of the measure was 4/4 to begin with; and while I had set it to 3/4 while I was sketching, I'm now trying to return it to its original duration.

Thanks, all.

Comments

1. Select the notes in the first three beats of the bar.
2. Press cut (CTRL+X)
3. If the first rest in the bar is not a crotchet value select it and press 5
4. Paste onto the second beat of the bar (CTRL+V)

MuseScore currently always adds rests to the end of the bar. When version 2 finally gets here there will be a split and join bar function which will help with this.

As a general point of reference, dragging things around is always visual only - it never affects the actual time position of anything. There are always specific commands to change time positions. This goes for notes and rests but also things like extending slurs, octave markings, voltas, etc - one command to adjust the visual appearance, but a different one to actually change the meaning of the symbol. This differentiation actually does turn out to be pretty elegant once you get used to it.
