Something's not quite right with my score...

• Jul 31, 2017 - 04:02

Hello everyone!

Working on an arrangement for a friend. I arranged a piece, starting with everything in concert pitch, then changed the transposing instruments once I reviewed the parts to make sure everything was right. The parts look fine...the score is, um...not. I'm not sure what happened here, and how to fix it. Any thoughts?

I'm not really sure what you've done here - what do you mean you "changed the transposing instruments"? You shouldn't normally mess with the transposition settings at all. Somehow your transposing instruments are all set to have no transposition. Did you start them off as non-transposing instruments and then change their names, or start them as what they are then change the transposition, or something else? Without knowing more about how you got into this situation, it's hard to advise how to get out of it. But my best advice at this point would be, select the clarinets staves, use Notes / Transpose to move them down a step, re-add the key signature, then do Staff Properties / Change Instrument to change the instrument (back) to clarinet.

All I did was initially change Staff Properties > Transpose written pitches to sound to Perfect Unison, so that I could input in concert pitch. Then, I simply went back to the parts and changed them back to their correct transpotision.

That's not really the issue, though, because they're correct. My issue is the parts are all over the place. Look at the 3rd clarinet in ms. 1 in the score view and in the part view...the score is all over the place.

Indeed, you should not have messed with the Transposition setting. To enter music at concert pitch, simply press the Concert Pitch button. So, that's something to know for next time.

By changing the transposition and trying to enter concert pitch notes while not in concert pitch mode, and then trying to change the transposition back in the parts, you unfortunately created a situation where things are pretty messed up.

For this score, you might be able to salvage things by following my advice from earlier and then hand-correcting the notes that are off by an octave. That's something that unfortunately happens if the transposition setting gets off between the score and parts.

You did something very unnecessary. If you want to enter or see the notes transposed, then enter the noes transposed while the concert pitch button is unselected. If you want to enter or see the notes in concert pitch then press the concert pitch button.

Changing the definition of the instrument in concert pitch mode, only changed the definition for concert pitch. Doing so in transposed mode only affects transposed the transposed position. These both affect the parts as well. This enables you to define previously undefined instruments.

What you did not mention, was that you had to change the key signature to make it look right. SO your question is how do you fix it? The answer is:

Create a new score with the same instruments. Go to the parts in the first version and copy those into the instruments in the second version. Your parts seem to be what you want still. You can then view your score as either in concert pitch (concert pitch button pressed) or transpoed (concert pitch not pressed). Then only fixes after that should be to add the rehearsal marks, I didn't notice any other system text doing a quick look through the score.
