Piano sounds muffled for mezzo piano dynamic
Just something I noticed yesterday – when writing a piece for piano if I set the dynamic to mp the playback sounds muffled slightly – but only for mp. When crescendoing past mp, I tend to here one note/chord be muffled. I tried adding mp in some other of my pieces and I saw the same effect.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm using MuseScore 2.1 on a mac. The issue is unaffected by what audio device (headphones/earphones/inbuilt speakers) I have connected.

If I understood the term "muffled" correctly, it could be the following:
Some soundfonts has special cutoff freq. adjustments for some velocity points.
If the required sample is not available, they are imitated in this way.
eg: for: ppp - 500Hz, mf: 2000Hz, fff 20000Hz
When switching from one dynamic to the other, if you are exactly at the point of change, this effect is obvious.

So would you reccomend switching to a new soundfont? Currently I'm using the default.

You can also use many additional SoundFonts if you like.
But it is also necessary to keep the default one. (both for reference and comparison.)
Because of other users are using it, maybe you want to know how they will hear (if you share the score).
