notes inaudible in notation mode
hello, when I write out a tune in Musescore 2 nightly builds, the notes aren't audible like they are in Musescore 1.3. I expect I just need to make some very simple adjustment, but if so, please would someone tell me what it is! Thanks a lot.

Which build specifically? And which OS? If Linux, did you do a full install? You can't just run the executable from anywhere, but I don't know the install procedure.
If not Linux, had you perhaps installed a build months ago, then tried a more recent one just now? If so, it probably isn't finding the soundfont. You probably need to Revert to factory settings , or do the manual equivalent where you find the appropriate data folders and delete them yourself.

Thanks for your quick reply. It is the latest nightly build, the only one released on 7th. April. My OS is Windows 7, but perhaps I haven't done a full install. I tried to download the 7-zip opener, but I had some difficulty, and the nightly builds seem to open just as well with winRAR, so I've been using that. I have been downloading nightly builds fairly frequently these last few weeks, but the notes, as I enter them, have been inaudible on all of them. With winRAR, Idouble-click on nightly build, then double-click on bin, then double-click on nightly-exe. I'll try your suggestion about revert to factory settings tomorrow and see how I get on. Thanks for th advice.

Windows 7 shouldn't need an install - just run the executable itself (or the nightly.bat batch file).
Sound definitely works, so something must be off on your system. If factory reset doesn't fix it, then go to View / Synthesizer and be sure a valid soundfont is selected. If that doesn't fix it, go to Edit / Preferences and report the settings on your I/O tab.

I have just tried the factory reset, but following the instructions, I got as far as 'bin', and when I clicked on that, instead of 'musescore exe.' I got 'iconengines', 'imageformats' and 'mscore'. I tried clicking on 'mscore', and I got the right words in the run dialogue, but as soon as I left a space after it, it just vanished. I'm beginning to feel more than a little out of my depth, as my computer skills are minimal, but I will try again tomorrow, and then try your other suggestions. Also, the 'iconengines', etc, were dated to when I downloaded Musescore 1.3, where the notes are audible, not to when I downloaded the nightly builds. Puzzling. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to try and help me.
I have just tried 'view', 'synthesiser' and I wasn't sure what to do, so I clicked 'add', and a window called 'soundfonts' appeared, but it was empty. Is that the way it should be? Thanks again.

Well, the instructions are for 1.3. To apply them to 2.0, you need to go to wherever you downloaded 2.0. Only you know that; we don't. Maybe you can find someone more computer ilterate to help if necessary?

I can find the nightly build, but to get to 'nightly exe.' I have to open it with winRAR, and then it doesn't show up in the run window. I'll try your other suggestions, but I might have to settle for your last one, to ask someone more computer literate to help. I do know one very kindhearted computer expert, but, predictably, he's a very busy man! Thanks for trying to help.

Hmmm, sounds like maybe you're missing something very simple here.
I'm thinking maybe you are trying to run directly from the archive. You can't do that. You need to first unzip that archive into a folder on your computer, then run it from there.
In other words:
1) download the file
2) open it in your favorite prograp (I use 7-Zip; not familiar with winRAR)
3) *extract the contents into a folder on your hard drive*
4) close 7-Zip / winRAR
5) now use Windows Explorer to go to the folder you just extracted to
6) now run nightly
Then you should have your soundfonts etc. Lots of other things were probably broken for you too, BTW - chord symbols, templates, styles, etc.

I think that may be my mistake! Well, I have had another try at downloading 7zip, since then I'll have more chance of understanding your advice, and this time I succeeded (I think) -it asked me what options I wanted, but I just clicked 'next', so I hope that's ok. It's definitely installed, when I open it, all the things I've scanned into the computer come up in the window. I think that's as far as I can go now, because I'll have to leave it now till after Easter, probably Monday. But I haven't given up, and I'm really grateful for your patience in trying to sort this out for me. Happy Easter!

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but the computer says, the soundfont folder I have is empty! I added it all the same - I've got nothing to lose - but there is still no sound. If you have any other ideas, please let me know. Thanks.

Sounds like you've selected a bogus soundfont folder. That's why resetting to factory defaults makes sense.
The direct way to reset on Windows 7 is, first make sure it is not running, then go to C:\Users\Yourname\AppData (using Windows Explorer). Then visit Local and delete the MuseScore folder (not the MusE folder, which is for 1.3). Then go back up to AppData, now visit Roaming and again delete the MuseScore folder. THen when you start MuseScore, it will be with fresh settings.

I have managed to open the nightly build with 7-zip. I chose the option 'extract to' followed by the exact name of the nightly build, minus '7z' at the end, and it opens with windows explorer, and it shows up in the 'run' window, and I managed to make it revert to factory settings; - but - there still isn't any sound! The notes are audible in musescore 1.3, so could you explain to me a bit more the other two things I should check? When I open Synthesizer, it looks like this,

I wonder if the fluid soundfont is too big for my computer? - It's a laptop, and in Musescore 1.3, I have the TimGM6mb.sf2 soundfont. I have down loaded the handbells soundfont, as it is much smaller, but I haven't tried to install it yet, as I would like your advice. I couldn't work out how to find the TimGM6mb.sf2soundfont at sourceforge. Sorry this is taking up so much time, and many thanks for your help.

Thanks a lot for trying to help, but I think I don't know enough about computers, when I follow the instructions it doesn't work for me, and possibly there's something a bit wrong with the computer, so I think I had better just leave it for now. But thanks again for taking the time to try and help, I expect someone else will benefit from it.
