tuplets in compound (12/8) time
I want to create a tuplet of 4 notes in the space of a dotted crotchet in 12/8 time
I have an example from another score which shows this as 4 semi-quavers but in musescore I can only get this as 4 quavers
anyone know how to make this semi-quavers?

tuplet of 4 notes, in 12/8 time:
on a dotted crochet (dottet quarter), you get 4 quavers (eighths)
on a dotted quaver (dotted eighth) you get 4 semi-quavers (16ths)
If you add the original score (at least showing the part you are asking and a few measures around), maybe we can answer better.

Make the duration a dotted 1/4 note or rest and select the menu Notes->Tuplets->other... and set the ratio to 4/6 this will make 4 16th notes instead of the normal 6.

Thank you that does exactly what I need
Could you explain what the 6 refers to ? quavers?

A ratio of 4/6 means: put 4 notes in the space that is otherwise occupied by 6 of those notes. The six thus refers to the base duration used for the tuplet so that normally 6 notes would equal the duration of the dotted quarter note.
1 dotted quarter note == 3 1/8th notes == 6 1/16th notes

four 8th is correct notation.
this one is questionable.

It is questionable but I've seen it in published classical scores. I wouldn't put it in my own score.
