Tabulature comments

• Jun 3, 2014 - 15:37

Could not find a suitable thread, so I started this one for comments, wishes and feedback on the tabulature-function in MuseScore.

I checked out the "abdd77f"-nightly of Musescore 2.0 today, and here's some feedback:

- Nice looking tabulature staff.

- I would like some way to shift tabs from one string to another, without changing the fret numbers. F.ex. CTRL+SHIFT would move the selected fret numbers up/down one string.

- Just found out that I can remove the stems from the tab - brilliant!

- When inputting notes into the tab, my first note is not always placed on the first beat, making my first bar into some sort of 3/4-bar. To fix this, I have to remove all content for the first bar and input them again. (Please note: This does not always happen, and may be a result of my sloppy hands).

- I can't find symbols/lines for 1/2 and 1/4 bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, rake, palm muting, muted strings and harmonics (natural and artificial).

Regarding the input problem, more info would help. How *exactly* are you inputting the tab? Normal method should be click measure, press "N" to enter note entry mode, then type a number. And this should always input at beginning of measure unless the measure already has content, in which case, it is appended. if you can reproduce a case where it doesn't happen this way, detailed step-by-step instructions would be useful.

- Symbols such as you list are found in the Palettes - mostly the Articulations palette. Many are hidden behind the innocuous looking full bend symbol. Add that then right click, Bend Properties, and you'll see a dialog allowing customization.

First of all, you may find useful info in these two handbook pages for features new to version under development:

Tablatures
Staff types

The features are constantly being updated, so the pages might be outdated, but they should give useful starting points.

The suggestion for a shortcut to move a note to another string keeping the same fret mark is useful, thank you!

Correct!

This would be useful when I write pattern-based excercises/etudes/songs.

F.ex. would C-E-D and F-A-G have the same fret numbers, but different strings. So if I want to write an finger streching exercise using those notes, I could write them on the A string, repeat the notes and shift them to the next string.

Or if I write tapping patterns on the B-string, I could easily move an arpeggio-based pattern to a different string - which is quite common.

(And sometimes you just have a brain fart and write stuff on the wrong string).

Nothing to do about the second, but for the first, consider, that's not unique to tab. It's a general transposition issue. And MuseScore already provides ways of doing that. Select a range of notes and hit Up arrow to raise one semitone at a time. Or use Notes->Transpose. For tab, you would then hit Ctrl+Up to move the notes up a string. I'm not convinced it's really necessary to provide anything above and beyond this just for this use case. Of course, I'm not actually opposed to it either.
