.msi files - why don't they work for me?

I have missed out on a number of updates because of the .msi update file. The file downloads to my computer, but when I try to double click or right-mouse click to open it, it simply asks if I want to save the file again. The process starts all over but no way to actually get the download to start. Am running Windows 10.
