Piano duet - playing fewer notes in one part on repeat

• Nov 21, 2017 - 22:26

I have a repeated section for piano duet.
The Secondo part has a standard repeat.
However, I want the Primo left hand to play through both times and only want the Primo right hand to play its C note the first time through.

I have seen "First time only" or similar before, however if notated like this it suggests that only the Secondo part should play the repeat.
See "A" on attached score.

Possible solutions I thought of are shown at B, C and D on the score.

  1. Is there a common way to notate this?
Can someone please show this on the score and/or point me to some published examples of this?

  2. Is there a workaround to make Musescore play this back as described?

Thanks Jm6stringer.

Using "R.H." instructions has given me more to search for and may lead to more questions.

In the meantime, is the style used in your example very common?
It isn't very clear to me.

Is the direction to a) play the left hand by itself the first time through and then play both hands the second time through OR
b) play the left hand by itself the first time through and only play the right hand by itself the second time through OR
c) play both hands the first time through and only play the right hand by itself the second time through ?

Assuming the example you show is exactly the topic, and that this is for teaching purposes, then surely by far the best way to write it is simply to repeat the two bars, with the difference. Apart from anything else this helps learners in the standard task of spotting that a phrase is repeated, but not quite exactly.
