Changing a part from soprano to alto recorder

• Jul 10, 2018 - 13:45

I don't have enough music theory knowledge. I wrote a piece for violin and recorder, not knowing my sister plays alto recorder. I found out how to add alto recorder, but how do I change the soprano part to alto since the alto is an F instrument? I want the alto part to be in D major, the violin part can be whatever (G major?) key is necessary.

Right click into the Soprano recorder staff, staff properties, change instrument, Alto Recorder, done, including trnaspositining.
What might be left to do is to adjust to the lower playable range

Note that the alto recorder is not a transposing instrument. You read in concert pitch. This means you have different fingerings ("F fingerings" according to Wikipedia) for the same pitch compared to the soprano recorder.

Your sister should be able to read the notes you already wrote, and just replacing the words "Soprano Recorder" with "Alto Recorder" at the top of the pages should be enough.

The recorder part and the violin part should be written in the same key (concert key).

While true in theory, I would observe that at least some people learning recorder do not learn it that way (eg, me :-). There are definitely those who wish to read alto recorder using soprano fingerings. To handle that, right click the staff, Staff Properties, and set the transposition to down a perfect fifth.
