Playback greyed out
I am using musescore 2.3.1 on Mac, High Sierra. A while ago the playback button became greyed out after an update. I tried all solutions suggested in the past, to no avail. I downloaded a nightly build which worked fine for awhile until it suddenly stopped working as well.
The button is greyed out (can't press it). Under I/O there is no info in the dropdown menus. The synthesizer menu button is greyed out. Anyone know what is causing this?

Yes I have tried that. And I have uninstalled and installed several versions.

You need an open score for this to be available

if View→Synthesizer shows you there is no SoundFont loaded, you can avoid reverting to factory settings by simply downloading and installing a replacement SoundFont. Make sure to apply the "Set as Default" button in the Synthesizer after loading the replacement SoundFont.
Have you checked: Preferences-> I/O?

I can't open the synthesizer because the button is greyed out.

I think it was a Mac OSX update. I can't undo it. The nightly build I was using stopped working just recently for unknown reason.

It works in all other respects.
Is everyone stumped on this? It seems like there should be a solution to this.

I tried that, but I might try with external speakers and we'll see. It has to be something with musescore not recognizing my sound card but I'm really scratching my head with this one.

I guess it's time to start over with the most basic of questions. You said you tried everything so let's see what you did.
Do you have a sound font loaded when you open the synthesizer? Which one?

I think my problem isn't clear enough. I cannot open the synthesizer. It's greyed out. previously, I had several sound fonts installed, including the default one.

I've note seen the Synthesizer grayed out in the menu before so it didn't make sense to me. You mentioned the play button being grayed out so I wanted to make sure I understood. As I said, I'm starting over trouble shooting step by step until someone who has seen this before interjects.
Can you attach a picture of your I/O tab from the edit->preferences menu? Also, mention any hardware that might interact with musescore besides a standard sound card you might have on your system.

sure, here's the I/O. I can't find anything that would conflict. There isn't anything in the drop down menus, clicking them doesn't do anything.

Means it doesn't detect your sound hardware at all. No sound card → no sound output.
You didn't by chance started MuseScore using the -s command line option (to disable sound)?

Take a try:
Open Preferences/General;
Click the SoundFont icon, check the path, and delete the contents of SoundFont Folders.
Add a new one or revert to factory settings.

I tried that didn't work. Checked the sound fonts path as well.

I honestly don't know. It could be something to do with installing High Sierra, but I feel like I had this problem before then.
Also check, if it works with an older version of MuseScore, to exclude that it isn't a regression of #234811: No sound on Mac and Windows, I/O's PortAudio API drop down menu empty.

This is what I get from the terminal code suggestion. AUHAL component not found. Is this the problem? Older versions do not work either, and no nightly build that I have tried works either.

I think you've found the problem via that log, but not having any insight into Mac audio internals, I can't help. It's definitely the thread for you to investigate further, though.
Not sure if this was discussed, but I went into the Preferences, and under General, I unchecked the option "Show Tours", clicked OK, and the top-menu was no longer grayed out. I don't know if it was just toggling, clicking "apply", or OK, but whatever it was, the grayed-out menu is no longer. I've gone back, re-enabled Show Tours, but the issue does not come back, so it may have just been the very act of toggling that solved it for me.
Same issue here. Can't have synthesizer nor inputs/outputs audio/midi. Musescore not seeing any of my MIDI inputs, nor my soundcard, etc. Mixer, Synthesizer and Play button greyed. I have tried everything I've read at the posts : factory settings, install/reinstall program...etc. Maybe it is a Catalina compatibility ? I'll have to stop using Musescore if that continues....
