Individual Instrument parts with sections in score form

• Jul 9, 2014 - 21:48

I want to create individual instrument parts for a score I am working on but I also want to switch back and forth to sections of score format within those parts for some complicated rhythmic sections to make the parts more easily performable. Is this possible?

If I understand what you want, you wish to have a part for each instrument that shows only its part for most of the piece but which shows the whole score for a particular section or sections?

I would split your work into separate sections and save them as separate files (say File_A, File_B, File_C, File_D, File_E). Create Parts when you want an individual instrument to read just from its part and print the whole score for your complex sections.

You can always create a "Master" work first and then save various bits of it as separate files before creating the Parts. But if you make any changes, make them to the Master and then re-split ans re-save the sections and recreate Parts.

thanks for the response underquark. the method that you propose would allow me to make parts to perform the piece adequately. the thing is, i am trying to put together a polished looking pdf of the piece and have tried to chop the work up a bit but can't figure out how to make the page and bar numbers work out to be properly sequential. do you think i have to move to finale or sibelius to get a more professional looking product?

Page numbers:
(Main menu) Layout -> Page Settings -> First page no.

Bar numbers:
Right-click on the first measure in the section, select Measure Properties, add to bar number.

So, create your separate files. In the second file you make the first page whatever is the last page of the first file +1. You add to the bar numbers whatever was the last bar number in the preceding file. You might need to scribble some notes on a bit of paper to help you but I can't see how Sibelius or Finale will make it a whole lot easier.

wow. thanks so much. all of that is very helpful and i will definitely be able to implement that. i also had a bit of a breakthrough today after hours of experimentation: i started a three part score and where i need "score form" i input all three voices. where i need just the one voice, i input only that voice. then i go to Style, edit General Style and then check the Hide Empty Staves box. this eliminates the sections with unused bars and reduces everything to one voice except for the sections where i have the three part score filled out. does that make sense? it is the closest approximation i can find to what i am looking for. it throws off some of the layout options a bit, but it seems to work okay. and from what i have heard from some composer friends who use finale or sibelius it doesn't seem as though those programs offer any better function than this. so musecore wins again!!
