Is there an easier way? (Beams)

• Sep 16, 2018 - 01:49

I read the handbook (again).
Can't seem to find one.
I have several repeated ascending triplet eights notes tied together forming sextuplets (with two "3" markings within). I prefer - and I feel is more clear -two separate triplets. I cannot separate them without the following digital gymnastics.
Enter note value (quarter) to divide into triplet 8ths.
Get out of note input.
Enter note, then click on Notes -tuplets-triplets and remembering to go to note input mode, enter other two ascending 8ths.
Repeat entering note value for second triplet. Enter first 8th, but Reverse Beam (x)
Then click for it NOT to be beamed.
Then enter the next two triplets.
Then click for the first 8th of this second triplet to be beamed to the other two.
You end up with two ascending triplets, but with the beams now separated and properly set, one up and one down.Very nicely done, but it takes so long..and there are 32 of these measures!
If there is no easier way, I'll deal with it. If there is, I'd sure like to know...
by Thanksgiving. :)

I'm sure you realize that you get answers in less than 2 months by now. You may get several answers because there are variables you did not explain.

Beaming on triplets follows the beaming for the time signature. To see this, right click the time signature and select Time Signature Properties... You will see where the default beaming breaks are in 8th and 16th notes. If it does not affect the rest of the score, you can adjust the beaming breaks here. This is the fastest way if you do not have other 16th notes affected by beaming. If adjusting this is not possible then enter the triplets so the beams are connected. Select the first note of the triplet you want to disconnect from the note before it and double click the note that has a beam only to the right in the Beam Properties palette. If you hover your mouse over it it will say "Beam Start". This will disconnect it from the previous note. You can select as many notes you want to apply this to at once, even all 32 measures worth if you like. Select a note, click, ctrl+click additional notes until you are ready to double click the beam in the palette.

I didn't even try to understand the procedure you explained, it made my head hurt. Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh yes! My repetoire expands! Better.
In, say, 12/8, the beaming works out smoothly automatically, but in this passage I have 8th triplets within a 6/4 passage, so the beams were long and tedious. I had a strong hunch there WAS an easier way. There is so much to grasp here. Eventually...

Thanksgiving is clear...I'll be done with this piece tonight!

You've been most helpful, Mike.
