Have cursor position honoured when switching between parts and score.

• Oct 15, 2018 - 18:07

At the moment, if you switch between a part and a score, they both retain the position they were last left in, regardless of where the cursor has been moved to in the alternate.

I switch often when I am writing, for example when I have a line in a part that I might want to duplicate in another part(s).

I would like the cursor's last position honoured when switching.

Program is just getting better and better. :)

Interesting idea. I'm not sure changing the behavior would be correct. I think it's probably a coin toss as to which a user wants each time.

Which behaviour should be default?

I switch back and forth a numerous times in a number of pieces.

If one is switching back and forth, why would they want to return to a different position than where they are already working?

I can't see a case for that, while I do see a strong case for my preference. :)

I can think of all sorts of reasons I might want to be working in one place on the part but a different place on the score. Perhaps more importantly, I can see even more reasons I might be working in a different spot on each part. In fact, that's probably the case more often than not. I'd hate it if every time I worked on one part, it forced the score and all other parts to then sync to the same location; theyre would be no easy way to get back to where I was actually working. So to me, a manual "sync" button to score and parts to the current "cursor position" (see below) makes more sense than forcing this to always happen.

But also, there is the question of what one means by "cursor position". There are actually five quite distinct things that in some way define "current position" and they might in theory be entirely different places:

  • while in note input mode, the note input cursor
  • while not in note input mode, the "selection cursor" (if a single note/rest is selected, it acts like a cursor)
  • while not in note input mode, the current selection if it is not a single note/rest
  • the set of measures currently in view
  • the position from which playback would commence if you hit Space

The second one on the list is probably what you mean, but consider, it's not necessarily always even valid - it ceases to have meaning if there is no selection or if the selection is anything but a single note/rest.

Thanks for responding and expanding my vision.

"So to me, a manual "sync" button to score and parts to the current "cursor position" (see below) makes more sense than forcing this to always happen." OKAY. :)

My usage that brought this up involved selecting a bar or note and then changing between part and score, so this is a part: "while not in note input mode, the current selection if it is not a single note/rest" (a bar).

":there would be no easy way to get back to where I was actually working."

Well, use the same methods you use now to get around, as I do. :)

" Perhaps more importantly, I can see even more reasons I might be working in a different spot on each part. In fact, that's probably the case more often than not."

Well, in that case, don't you go to the bar you want to wok on and then alternate windows? That's what I am doing, going through various parts and editing. In that case I would like the window to go to the same measure.

Obviously, I can navigate manually, But to the extent we can save time with a single button, I'm all for it. A single buttons that says "sync score and parts" can save time in those cases where you want it. But if that were the default, there would be no way to add a button to undo that - a "go back to where you were before" button. Well, it might be technically possible, but it would be far more awkward to even describe what it did much less implement it.

The case I am talking about is a score for multiple instruments I might be looking at bar 1-4 on the first alto part, bars 23-29 on the second alto part, bars 56-59 on the first tenor part, etc. I like it that if I am working on the first alto part in bars 1-4, then click the first tenor part, the tenor part is still on bars 56-59 where I left off there. And if I then click the first alto part, I'm still right where I left off there, on abrs 1-4. To me it would be incredibly annoying to if every time I scrolled one part to a different location, every single part and the score also scrolled to that same location. In fact it's almost impossible for me to imagine a case where I'd want this.
