ledger lines up high
Entering a melody for violin or flute in the very simplest way (since I am a beginner) I can write the E on the third ledger line above the treble staff but musescore will not let me go higher. Notes up to the fifth ledger line have been routine for flutists and violinists since Mendelssohn's day. Don't tell me to use "8va."

of course you can go higher. But if there's a staff above, not by using the mouse, as then the staff above grabs the note. So add it lower, then move up using the arrow keys
Should have mentioned
Mac OS X version 10.11.6
musescore version 2.3.2, revision 4592407
Is there some sort of top margin that I am bumping into?

Sure not, see Shoichi's sample score.

No, just the area taken by the staff above. As mentioned, rather than using the mouse to enter notes, it's easier to type the letter names anyhow, and then you don't have this limitation.
What version of MuseScore?
2.3.2 attached
