I understand it as attaching a separate symbol to the line, correct?
I have done it that way, but is it possible to change the size of the symbol?

You enter the symbol as a special character (text) and then increase the font size to enlarge the symbol.

Yes, text can be enlarged/diminished by increasing/decreasing font size.
