notation for rests
I am writing a part which has a 8 measure rest at the very beginning. I know I can just put 8 empty bars there. However, I am wondering if it is possible to just put one empty bar and have a 8 on top of the measure to indicate that the rest is gonna last for 8 measures long.

If this is a single instrument score, then press m and all multi-measure rests will be turned on. I would wait until all of the notes are entered to do this because it's confusing to enter notes into multi-measure rests. If there are other parts in the score, then when you extract parts using File->Parts, the parts automatically have multi-measure rests turned on.
