Selecting a hair pin or dynamic change such as cresc--- and pressing x, changes the direction of the dynamic change. In other words. crescendos become decrescendos rather than moving above the staff.
You can turn off auto placement and move it.
Edit: this is actually a cool feature, but the wrong shortcut for it.

Comments
Instead of manually moving it, the better way to move above the staff is the Placement setting in the Inspector. To me, that affects the severity (and priority) of this.
But I agree that while being able to change crescendo to a diminuendo is cool and all, it would be better for "X" to flip placement instead, as it does for most other elements. Maybe use "Shift+X" (same shortcut as "Mirror notehead") to do the other thing?
