master volume

I can control the audio out for speakers and internal playback from a combination of the synth volume slider and my computer playback options. But what I am not sure about or understand is how the export level is set.
I cannot get my head around how the synth volume slider setting could be exported since I believe it is not saved. This leads me to think that it would be nice to have a master volume on the mixer. I could be all wrong about this.
