Appending bars

When in a score in Musescore 3 I want to insert a number of bars. Doing this with Add/Bars gives me one long block of bars, as in attached snip, not individual ones.

Can I get these to split?

To be clear: it seems you must have already pressed "M", which enabled multimeasure rests. Presumably that was an accident. But now you can press it again to turn them back off.
