How do you create a roll with the symbol on here without the playback sounding choppy? I tried adding a tremolo, because that's what it is read with but is there any way to make it actually sound good?

You can put a pedal line under the roll and make it invisible. Keep in mind it will crescendo if the note is very long. I do this and make the pedal line invisible on cymbals and marimbas.
