I've been working on a file for a few days. Today after upgrading to the new version I kept working on it and saved it but now when I try to open it again to continue working it won't open and i get a notification that the software can't read the file. any ideas how i can fix it?

Something happened to the file that it didn't save properly. You will need to find a backup. Read https://musescore.org/en/node/52116 for instructions.
It happend to me too, for 3.0.5.5992, I couldn't open the file, couldn't rename it, I could make a copy of it, but couldn't open the copy either. it said I didn't have the previledge.
it was solved either wait for a while or a system reboot i am not sure.
The attached file is in a state that will never allow it to open with MuseScore. It's damaged. There is not enough data in it to discover the score that's supposed to be inside of it.

Oh, sorry I didn't put clear, I was saying it happened to me with my file - "mscz file won't open"
For the attached, it happened just as mike320 and Ziya tested.
Very good, I didn't want to give oll false hope that there was a chance his file would open. When a file like this is attached, I look at it in notepad. If the screen (at the size I have it) is not filled up with characters, then I know there is not enough data to be able to open the score. I have on a few occasions been able to recover the mscx file (actual score data) so the work is not lost, but files that cannot be fixed are more common.

I wonder how did it happen to "oll", so we can avoid it happens to us.
It's been randomly happening for years and we can't figure it out. I was hoping it would be accidentally fixed in version 3, but that seems to not be the case.

Random is hard to trace, a lot of issues could cause it, give it up and keep good backups.
arrgg... cant believe I need to start over. Thanks for all your comments
That file is broken beyond repair, after a valid ZIP header it contains nothing but zeroes. See #271185: Scores corrupted beyond repair, containing nothing but zeros
You should have found a backup following the directions in https://musescore.org/en/node/52116. The only time there might not be a backup is if this is a new score and you haven't closed and reopened the score since it was created.
