1) Open Musescore
2) Activate note writing
3) Try to use the "5" key, as a shortcut for changing the note value to a crotchet.
It does not work at all and is annoying, causing a huge waste of time.

If it just the "5", or all numbers? My guess is you are using the numeric keypad rather than the standard numbers, or vice versa, and the shortcuts for your particular keyboard layout are configured for the other. Or, perhaps, if you are on a keyboard where 5 requires Shift, it's conflciting with another shortcut like Shift+whatever-is-below-5. When you install and first run MuseScore, it asks you to confirm keyboard layout. Do you know what yours is? Do you remember if it was correct when you were asked? What happens if you go to Edit / Preferences / Shortcuts and try to reset those shortcuts? Or redefine them?
One more possibility is that the button is broken. What happens if you use it to type a 5 in other programs.
