Custom noteheads
Is it possible in Musescore to define custom shape noteheads? I am able to do this in Lilypond, where I have noteheads that are more elliptical and more angled. Can Musescore be extended in this way?

For the general musical symbols font, your choices are as follows:
Use menu item: Format -> Style... -> Score where you can choose a different musical symbols font. Perhaps you may find a preference from among the four choices.
For custom shape noteheads such as 'Triangle', 'Plus', 'Diamond', etc. use the Inspector, or the 'Noteheads' palette.

Thanks, but that is not what I am talking about. My post was probably not clear enough. In lilypond I have code for note head stencils which is highly refined and very specialised, to produce a different shaped notehead to the standard lilypond glyphs, in my case, to come closer to the handwriting style of the composer I work with. This is not just an alternate notehead style, but rather a delicate customisation of shape.
Can this be done in Musescore?
I suppose I am looking for the sort of power that lilypond has, which may not be available in Musescore. But I hope there is some way.

Nothing automatic, but you can certainly import those as graphics and paste them onto the notes as you see fit.

This is actually the basis of the version 2 solfa notation plugin like https://musescore.org/en/project/add-note-name-noteheads.
There would no doubt be additional considerations in version 3 but it could still be adapted.
