Can't find answers
I have two problems:
1. How can I make one note of a chord longer than another? If I try to input, say a minim on C under a crotchet on E, the score will not allow it, yet I have seen finished scores where this has been done.
2. My score has violin, cello and piano staves. When I try to add extra bars at the end, however, only the top line (violin) is extended. How can I add extra measures of all three staves?

For using different durations of notes inside a chord, see: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/voices
For your second request: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/measure-operations#append doesn't help?
Adding measures should always add to all staves, there' actually no way to have that not happen. So something else must be going on. In order to understand, we'd need you to attach your score and describe exactly what you are doing (eg, Ctrl+B to append a measure).

Hide empty staves? And top staff set to never hide?
