Note Input

Note input seems to force all notes that are 'vertically aligned' to be of the same duration. So, for example, I cannot write a piano part with a crotchet in the tune, and a sequence of 2 quavers in the harmony underneath. This is pretty basic stuff musically, so there must be a way to do it. But how?
