I can't figure out how to beam these two notes together. I've read the tutorial but it didn't help much

quarter notes (and longer) don't have beams, only 8th and shorter can have them (instead of flags)

Even when I change it to an 8th note, I can't get it to work

Got them to sort of work. They won't connect up though

If you want them beamed accross a rest, you'd need to 'beam' the rest too, via the beams palette.
Also only adjacent 8th (and shorter) get beamed

Now the issue is that it won't let me place a quater note (5) without it spreading to the next bar, any help there?

The lesson here is, in the future, don't enter quarter notes then try to change to eighths. Just enter eighths to begin with and everything just works.
Or, if you enter a whole passage in quarter notes that you later decide you want to change to all eighths, you can select the passage, Ctrl+X to cut, then Edit / Paste Half Duration.
