Removing unwanted bars

I had to rewrite the first 4 bars of a piece, so I inserted an extra 4 bars after the first 4 so I could see what I'd originally done as I rewrote them. Now I want to remove the first 4 bars (having deleted the notes from them) but I've tried everything I can think of and can't get rid of them....
