Lyrics under small notes

Transcribing Ben Folds' "the luckiest" to add a cello line. Ben uses extra syllables and notes on subsequent verses, requiring small notes to notate. But the system won't let me put lyrics under the small notes, only the large. Anyone conquered this challenge in the past?

(Edited to delete the draft score and insert the finished score. My solution - under looming deadling - was to separate syllables with periods. My singer knows it well enough for tomorrow night's performance that this won't throw him.)
