When using the Small Marching Band template
Ride too. I see we are using MIDI pitches 72. 74, and 76 in the drumset definition. These don't seem to relate to anything in particular, maybe they were used in the "old" marching soundfont, or are used in MDL?
Small Marching Band:
72 (Ride Cymbal), 74 (Closed Hi-Hat). 76 (Open Hi-Hat)
Marching Band:
27 (Closed Hi-Hat), 28 (Pedal Hi-Hat), 29 (Open Hi-Hat), 30 (Ride)
instruments.xml though has (Standard Kit):
42 (Closed Hi-Hat), 44 (Pedal Hi-Hat), 46 (Open Hi-Hat),
and in Marching Snare Drum:
72 (Ride Cymbal)
and also (Orchestra Kit):
27 (Closed Hi-Hat), 28 (Pedal Hi-Hat), 29 (Open Hi-Hat), 30 (Ride)
So Ride Cymbal seem to be the same/correct, only the Hi-Hats on the Small Marching Band template are different/wrong.
Or instruments.xml is wrong on that Marching Snare Drum Ride Cymbal (too)?

Turned out to be a SoundFont issue, @s.chriscollins is working on that
Fixed soundfonts tor the time being available at

and the HQ version at

I'd hope them to become part of 3.5
That Small Marching Band template works unchanged with those and the snare drum cymbals (Ride Cymbal, Closed Hi-Hat Open Hi-Hat) sound.
(Not really a PR, but that's the closest status)

The new soundfont solved issue 279212, "Phantom notes". That problem was present all the way up through version 2.4.2. and 3.5 alpha. It presented as a high pitched howl when using the string ensemble. Installing the new HQ soundfont in both these versions has solved that problem. Thanks guys for the good work.

Thanks a lot. Do you by chance know how to download the soundfont for the snare drum?

If you listen closely you will hear errant tones played by a flute-like instrument in music that has only strings.
This weird effect disappears when using the HQ soundfont by Collins as stated above.
