Yes, I thought it would have already been suggested... thank you. But what about instruments that can do both? Like Strings? What if a composer writes down a glissando, but he means a portamento or vise versa? So perhaps there should be a line with the word portamento on it?

can do both what?
Once portamento is implemented all instruments could used it, but not for all it makes sense, like for a piano.
But for a synth it does, also for trombone, human voice, bowed strings

I meant can do both glissandi and portamenti... I'm not sure if I misunderstand, but shouldn't there be a symbol for portamento?

It'd be a glissando style setting: chromatic, diatonic. white keys, black keys, portamento. Possibly a straight glissando line with the text portam. in the palette

Wait I was just wondering how violins know whether they must do glissando or portamento in a performance? Also I can reply to posts by sending mails through my mail instead of logging in here?
