Printing the score

• Jun 6, 2020 - 15:45

When printing the score, some pages only contain two or three measures per line, thus wasting a lot of paper. How can I control the number of measures per line in the preparation of printing the score?
Thanks for any help.

There is no "fit N measures on a line" command in Musescore. There are too many variables that determine the size of a measure to make that workable. In particular the size of a measure depends on the number of notes it contains, and hence the number of measures that can fit on a single line is similarly determined by the number of notes in the measure. You can fit several measures with single whole notes, but only a few measures that are full of 32nds).

But the good news is there are many ways of controlling the number of measures per line. I suggest you start by looking in the handbook, particularly here: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/layout-and-formatting, and then here: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/page-settings and here: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/layout-and-formatting#system-breaks and here: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/layout-and-formatting#layout-stretch

Preparing scores for printing is always going to involve a number of compromises and decisions. e.g. can I arrange it so that the page turn in a part follows a long series of rest bars? Can I get a repeat to start and end at the start and end of lines? Can I spread those measures out so that the final page is filled? Musescore leaves those compromises and decisions to the users (thankfully!).

Thank you, SteveBlower, for your response, but . . . even after spending a lot of time trying to change the various settings . . . I am having absolutely no success. Is there any way you could give me more specific help? (I think you have the score, but I will attach it again.)
NOTE: When I went to "format - page setting" and made some adjustments, the "Previews" showing were perfect (many measures per line as desired), but these changes were not reflected in the printing or in a pdf export.
Thanks

Basically, a mix of the effect of two main settings in any layout. The first in Format/Style/Measure: spacing to 1.00 (instead of the default, 1.20). The second, in Format/Page Settings/ Scaling: staff space to 1.300 instead the default 1.764.
Finally, perhaps for personal taste (at least in this score, to balance the display of the pages), in Style/Page/ Music top margin: 19,5 margin (instead 7,00)
And probably also, a few remove of system breaks here and there.
