thank you. as you can see i am a beginner at this. From what i understand then when the 8 is there below the clef sign it means that a note that would otherwise sound as C4 if it was not there sounds instead when there as C3; is this correct?

Yes, exactly. And 8 above the staff would be the opposite. Sounds and octave higher than what is written.
