add single eight note
i have four eight notes tied together and then want a separate eight note followed by an eighth note rest. whenever i try to put the single eight note in it automatically ties to the prior tied four notes. how can i just add a single eight note without it automatically tying to the prior tied notes?
i have uploaded the score to show the situation: https://musescore.com/user/22400121/scores/6222269?utm_source=email&utm…

Either use the beam palette: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/beams or if you want to have the same behavior for all measures of the whole score adjust the note groups in time signature properties: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/time-signatures#time-sig-properties.

thank you. from what i see the instructions there for for how to create a beam. my problem is how to stop a beam from extending. the 4 eight notes in the measure are already beamed. the problem is i want the next note to be a single 8th note but when i enter it it automatically is joined with the extant beam.

To prevent a beam from being created, click the note that should no longer be connected, then click the "beam start" icon in the palette.

i see what may be the problem. my mistake. the rest after the first eight note should be an eight note rest but it is a quarter note. maybe that has thrown things off.

i changed it to red single eighth note, eight note rest, four beamed eight notes, but when i tried to enter a single eight note again it beamed together with the four preceding notes.

I'm French, so, I don't understand completly what you ask.
First are you sure of your 11/8 ,,?
on your score the first eight note of the first time is not tied ?????
the eight rest is not eight but quater ???
Try this : on another bar : note input , if you have a whole rest, tape 4 to have eight rest. On the first eight rest on the first time, enter your first eight note. Then, Tape 0 (Zéro) this add your eight rest (if it's what you want) then enter your 4 eight notes

thank you. do you happen to be in France, in Paris? What i am actually trying to do for the first few measures is to replicate those in an Oratorio bya Frenchman, Fernande de Beaufranchet from 1874.

Your score doesn't match your description as you have two 8th note rests, not one, but no matter....
How to alter the beaming has already been described above - it's in the Handbook https://musescore.org/en/handbook/beams.
Click on "Beam properties" at the bottom of the palette to find the options - play around with each symbol to see how they work.
