How do I enter notes of different time values onto a single staff?

I want to enter a bass line into a grand staff that consists of a Half note played on the first beat, then a three note chord of half notes played on the second beat. Can this be done on one staff? My example shows on two staffs what I'd like to put on the bass staff.
