Mid-Staff Sound Change

• Aug 4, 2020 - 04:23

Hi Everyone,

Well, I've looked through the handbook and discussions but the solution for this problem still eludes me. I want to change the sound of an electric guitar from "clean guitar" to "palm-muted guitar" for a specific number of measures in playback as well as notation.

I don't actually need to change the sound mid-staff but for a specific number of staves or measures. This is in regular scoring (not tablature) and the passage consists of two-note chords (thirds) which I will mark with crossed notes.

I've tried the "staff text" instructions but when I get to the channels it doesn't allow me to change the sound. I try doing this from the mixer, highlighting the staves, but then it changes the sound of the guitar for the whole score.

No doubt, there's something I'm not getting here. Thanks for any suggestions.

David

Thank you Cadiz1. I see you got the muted sound with the crossed notes for specific measures. What did you do to get the effect? I'm using scoring for an electric guitar without tablature with chords of two stacked thirds for a set range of measures. If you can give me a step-by-step, that would be helpful and I'm sure helpful to others.

Thanks for your prompt reply!

Thanks again, cadiz1. I opened a separate score, input the notes, followed the mute instructions, and the effect worked. I copied and pasted that same measure into the original score and the the strings were unmuted again and the channels only showed normal. I see how the effect works, but not how to retain the effect in the score. I'm missing something, obviously. I won't waste anymore of your time until I get a chance to puzzle it out again later today.

I very much appreciate your prompt replies and visuals!

Are you sure this "original score" is really for guitar? (also, created with MuseScore, or imported from other format?)
To check and assist better, could you attach this "original score" please?

EDIT: not related surely, but which version of MuseScore are you using? (check in menu "Help" / About)

Hi cadiz1,

MuseScore 3.4.2. This is just a short guitar passage I'm working out with other instruments. Yes, original scoring, not imported. I suspect the problem might be that the guitar line was copied and pasted from another instrumental line and has retained the properties of that other instrument. You provided the clue in your "original score" comment. The solution may be to re-enter the notes directly into the measures. I'll test out this hypothesis later today. I've not encountered many cut-and-paste issues, but this is the first time I've tried to change the sound of the instrument in the middle of a sequence of measures.

I'll let you know. Thanks again for your help cadiz1! It's like having Gardner Read on the line.

Hi cadiz1,

To follow up: yes, that was the problem. The mistake I made was the copy-and-paste of the vocal line into the guitar line which then still retained the vocal properties. Also, I had missed the fact that I had un-beamed the notes for the vocal line (my usual practice), although I don't know how much that contributed to the problem. When I re-entered the notes directly from note input, the staff text properties gave me the mute and other options. And, of course, I didn't care very much for the muted sound after all, so I wound up retaining the "clean" guitar. But I did catch the need to re-beam the notes and I learned a little lesson. Thanks for your replies.
