I guess you want the metronome - click the icon at the right hand end of the toolbar shown in that manual article.

If the tempo is fast enough this happens automatically. Otherwise you have to fake the metronome by adding something like a woodblock and having it play a note on every beat. You can make it invisible in the instruments dialog.

It does it automagically if you set the tempo slower than 60 bpm.
It would be nice if we could have more control over how the metronome behaves and a few suggestions have been made like #248856: Request for control over metronome behavior in compound meter for example.
