Standard convention for writing guitar chords as notation.

When writing guitar chords as notation, is the standard convention to also include the open stringed notes, or only the notes that are held down with a finger?

Well, consider writing a simple Em chord. If you only notated the fingered notes, you would only have a B and an E. So have you written a major or a minor chord? As far as I know, you should notate every string you want to sound.

Good point...
Additionally, playing just the first three open strings (E-B-G) will produce a (simpler) Em chord, so chord notation must include open strings. How else?

(This is also a good thing for piano - as all strings are 'open' strings... ;-)
