"diminished chord" symbol
When adding chords, how can I get the symbol (little high circle after chord letter) rather than having to write "dim" every time?
I have tried using alt+0186 but this doesn't work.

Just use an "o". See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/chord-symbols#chord-symbol-syntax

Note that in accordance with standard practice, this doesn't superscript except when using Jazz style.

Thanks both.
On a related point, what system does Musescore use in choosing a chord's inversion on playback?

See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/playback-chord-symbols-nashville-numb… for a bit of information on that.

The inversion is as specified by the chord symbol itself: C is root position, C/E is first inversion, C/G is second. If you mean the voicing chosen for the notes above the root, there are a range of options you can select from the in Inspector, but the default is a simple close position voicing with all notes in the octave from middle C up.
