adding note "slots" back into a bar

I accidentally pressed "remove selected range" and now I have a half note occupying the entire space available for a single bar. I'd like to add two quarter notes at the end. How do I do this? If I try to make it into a whole note, it'll just put a two half note slur extended into the next bar, replacing the first two quarter notes of the second bar.
